Epic Antarctica Day-by-Day

Arrival in Dunedin

Arrive in Dunedin and transfer to your pre-voyage hotel. Visit the hospitality desk in the afternoon to collect your luggage tags and receive details about your upcoming journey. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the city or relax.

Day 1

Departure

Enjoy breakfast and check out of your hotel, ensuring your cabin luggage is labeled with your name and cabin number. Take your luggage to reception for transfer to the port. Spend the morning exploring Dunedin at your leisure. Once on board, settle into your comfortable cabin and join your expedition team on deck as we set sail. Enjoy a delicious dinner while toasting to the adventure ahead.

Day 2

At Sea

Spend your day at sea relaxing and learning about the history and wildlife of this extraordinary region. Your expedition team is available for questions and tips on photography and birdwatching, and you can attend engaging lectures to enhance your experience.

Day 3

New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands

Explore New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands, first visited by Māori navigators and of great significance to Ngāi Tahu, the indigenous peoples of the South Island. Renowned for their breathtaking natural beauty and remarkable biodiversity, these remote islands offer a rare opportunity for exploration.

Day 4-6

At Sea

As Campbell Island fades from view, watch for Campbell, Salvin's, and white-capped albatrosses that may follow the ship. Join your expedition team in the lecture room to learn about the intriguing human history of Macquarie Island and how to identify the unique wildlife we hope to encounter in the coming days.

Day 7

Macquarie Island

Macquarie Island, or "Macca," is a stunning subantarctic haven rising steeply from the Southern Ocean, teeming with life. Keep your binoculars handy for spotting 3.5 million breeding seabirds, including kings, gentoos, rockhoppers, and endemic royal penguins, along with three types of fur seals and many elephant seals. Experience the vibrant sights and sounds as you approach one of the largest wildlife concentrations in the Southern Ocean, and be sure to admire the mesmerizing kelp forests. Historically, Macquarie Island was also significant; it hosted a radio relay station in 1911, facilitating the first communication from Antarctica to the outside world.

Day 8-9

At Sea

As we depart Macquarie Island, watch for albatrosses following the ship. Crossing the Antarctic Convergence, expect cooler temperatures and nutrient-rich waters, perfect for spotting porpoising penguins and various petrels. Enjoy leisure time to relax, socialize at the bar, or attend lectures on the unique wildlife and history of the Antarctic coastline ahead.

Day 10-12

Ross Sea - Antarctica

Arriving in the Ross Sea is a breathtaking experience, filled with the fresh, crisp air of Antarctica. This vital wildlife sanctuary hosts diverse species, including Ross Sea orcas, Antarctic petrels, Weddell seals, and the largest colonies of Adélie and emperor penguins. Since 2016, the region has been protected as the world's largest marine protected area. The Ross Sea also has a rich human history, with expeditions dating back to James Clark Ross in 1841. Explore preserved sites, artifacts, and huts that tell the stories of those who ventured into this remote landscape. Your expedition team will tailor each day’s adventures, maximizing wildlife encounters and responding to weather and ice conditions.

Day 13-18

Expedition Cruising

Reflect on your journey so far during these sea days. Engage in daily educational activities, lectures, and citizen science programs offered by your expedition team. Enjoy the onboard amenities, including the sauna and gym, as you sail past the mesmerizing ice shelves of the West Antarctic coast. Keep an eye out for Antarctic prions, snow petrels, and whales from the deck while you settle into life at sea. Your voyage continues towards the southern extremity of the Antarctic Peninsula, inspired by the explorers who paved the way before you.

Day 19-26

Antarctic Peninsula

During your time on the Antarctic Peninsula, enjoy twice-daily landings and Zodiac excursions. Explore stunning ice cliffs and grounded icebergs while keeping an eye out for whales, seals, and penguins. Zodiacs will transport you to land for visits to penguin rookeries, historic sites, and scenic spots. Stretch your legs along pebbly beaches or hike snow-covered ridgelines for breathtaking views. Optional activities, including polar plunges, may be available when conditions permit. In addition to excursions, cruise through dramatic straits and scenic bays, marveling at sculptural icebergs and stunning landscapes. Take in the panoramic views from the observation lounge or the bridge, and listen for the majestic sounds of glaciers calving into the sea. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this remarkable white continent.

Day 27-31

At Sea

Sail towards the South Shetland Islands, where you can explore stunning coves and witness chinstrap and gentoo penguins, along with fur and elephant seals. In the afternoon, start your journey across the Drake Passage. Reflect on your incredible experiences, organize your photos, or simply relax on board. We hope you'll share your adventures and advocate for the conservation of the Southern Ocean when you return home.

Day 32-33

Departure

Cruise through the Beagle Channel before arriving in Ushuaia. Disembark and bid farewell to your expedition team and fellow travelers.
